DCTC TRANSFER CREDIT POLICY
Students wishing to transfer to DCTC from another postsecondary institution should follow the college’s admission procedures detailed on the college’s website. This is only a brief overview of DCTC College Policy. Please refer to our website for the most current version and the entire policy: College Policies - DCTC.
General Transfer Policies
Transfer credit will be evaluated based on sufficient academic quality when compared with curricula and standards used to meet degree requirements at DCTC. Courses approved for transfer must be comparable in nature, content and level, and match at least 75 percent of the content and goals of the course for which the student is seeking equivalent credit. When a course doesn’t meet 75%, elective credit will be awarded.
Transfer credit grades will not be used in computing a student’s DCTC grade-point average. DCTC will accept General Education courses from other institutions with grades of D- or higher, and technical courses with a grade of C- or higher. While these grades will be accepted by the college, they may not be accepted by individual departments due to varying departmental policies regarding acceptable grades for graduation.
Transfer Of MnTC and Other Courses
Individual courses from other Minnesota State colleges transfer according to the MnTC goal areas designated for them by the institution where the student originally took the course. Completion of the entire goal at another Minnesota State institution completes the goal at DCTC. However, there is no guarantee that courses from private and non-Minnesota State colleges will satisfy MnTC goals, even if the courses may be transferable as electives. Such courses are evaluated on an individual basis. A cumulative 2.0 GPA in all MnTC courses is required for recognition of completion of the entire MnTC.
National Accreditation College Credits
Up to 16 credits from nationally accredited institutions will be accepted by the college as general elective credit. Students need to submit syllabi for review to earn technical or specific course credit. While credits from nationally accredited institutions will be accepted by the college, individual departments may decide not to accept these credits toward degree or certificate requirements.
International Credits
To have international or foreign credits potentially apply toward a degree program at DCTC; students are required to have prior international credits evaluated by a NACES approved professional agency. A list of these agencies may be found online at naces.org. An official copy of NACES approved agency evaluation is required for a transfer evaluation.
Appealing the Transfer Evaluation
New or continuing students unsatisfied with the transfer award may appeal to the Registrar’s Office by filling out the Transfer Review & Appeal in a student’s eServices account.
Students unsatisfied with the outcome of their transfer credit appeal have the right to final appeal that decision to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Registrar’s Office will forward the review to the VP of Academic Affairs, along with any attached supplemental information such as a syllabus, course description and faculty credentials. The student will receive a final decision in writing from the Vice President.
If the student is not satisfied with the college transfer final appeal decision, the student may submit a request to the Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs for a system-level appeal of the college transfer appeal decision.
CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING (CPL)
CPL is academic credit awarded for demonstrated competence at the college level from learning gained through experiences outside college credit-bearing courses and assessed by academically sound and rigorous methods and processes.
DSST, IB, CLEP, and AP do not count as residency credit. DCTC may accept the following for credit:
College Level Exam Program (CLEP)
CLEP examinations are designed to assess student mastery of introductory college course material in particular subject areas. A student who earns a score of 50 or higher on a CLEP examination will receive college credit. You can see how CLEP scores transfer to DCTC here: CLEP Equivalency Chart - DCTC.
DSST
DSST examinations are designed to assess student mastery of introductory college course material in particular subject areas. A student who earns a score of 400 or higher on a DSST examination will receive college credit. You can see how DSST scores transfer to DCTC here: DSST Exams at DCTC.
Advanced Placement (AP)
AP Exams are designed to assess student mastery of introductory college course material in particular subject areas. College credit will be granted to students who earn a 3 or higher in an Advanced Placement examination. You can see how AP scores transfer to DCTC here: Advanced Placement (AP) Equivalency Chart.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit
A student may receive credits for individual higher level IB examination scores of 4 or higher. Students can earn between 2-8 credits per course depending on level and score. Please refer to the IB Equivalency table to see how many credits each exam is worth. A student must provide the college with an official report of IB examination scores to receive credit. You can see how AP scores transfer to DCTC here: IB Equivalency Chart - DCTC.
Military Education & Experience
Credit will be awarded upon receiving an official copy of a Joint Services Transcript (JST) or transcript from CCAF or Air University. DCTC complies with Minnesota Statute 197.775 which exceeds all criteria of Title 38 United States Section 3679(e).
Prior Learning Assessment Program (PLA)
Students with a variety of work and life experiences have the opportunity to earn college credit for knowledge and skills they have gained outside of a formal classroom. Prior learning assessments can be evaluated in a variety of ways, such as an exam, skills demonstration, portfolio, or interview. Prior learning assessments are based on individual course outcomes, and the credits earned are counted as meeting the residency and college graduation requirements. Courses completed through PLA are recorded on the student transcript the semester in which the student registers. An official grade of Pass or No Credit will be reflected on the transcript.
Industry Credentials
Inver Hills will grant credit equivalencies for certifications, trainings, and apprenticeships completed in Industry. A table of approved industry credentials can be found here: Crosswalk Search | MyCPL. If you do not see one listed for DCTC, please contact Kirstin Nelson (kirstin.nelson@dctc.edu) to have your credential evaluated for credit.
