HEAL 1062 - Intro to Nursing Assistant Practice

This course introduces concepts of basic human needs and the function of the nursing assistant in long term care and or home health care. Basic nursing skills will be demonstrated and practiced and then return demonstrated to instructor online. Uponsuccessful completion of classroom studies, the student will be prepared to challenge the Nursing Assistant exam, NNAAP, in order to be placed on the Nursing Assistant Registry. This is not a Minnesota State approved program. The intention is to givestudents the basic knowledge and skills for entry level nursing assistant duties.Prerequisites: None. Individuals who provide direct contact services to clients of licensed facilities are required to have complete criminal background studies. Disqulified persons will not be permitted to work in these facilities.***This is not a Minnesota State approved program.***
Learning Outcomes
Describe effective communication and identify components of verbal and non-verbal communication. Demonstrate competency when measuring the resident?s vital signs, height, and weight Describe factors which interfere with elimination and demonstrate competency in skills related to elimination Describe how federal and state regulations relate to the nursing assistant and incorporate personal values with ethics and etiquette. Identify the factors which affect the nutritional needs of the resident and demonstrate competency in skills related to food and fluids. Identify actions relating to resident safety, including use of proper body mechanics and standard precautions for infection control. Discuss growth and development throughout one?s lifespan and describe normal aging process. Describe the importance of skin care and demonstrate competency at providing for the personal care needs of the resident. Discuss the effects of immobility and demonstrate competency in the skills of activity and exercise.
