MCOD 1400 - Diagnostic Coding (ICD-10-CM)

This hands-on class immerses students into to the ICD-10-CM alpha-numeric diagnostic classification system for physician-based medical coding. Students abstract diagnostic statements from medical case studies and apply the Official ICD-10-CM Guidelines for accurate medical coding. Students learn about human diseases and how the ICD-10-CM classifies different diseases and injuries.

Current ICD-10-CM Conventions Review of anatomy and physiology diagrams in ICD-10-CM (AAPC edition) Abstracting from the medical record ICD-10-CM Alpha Index Reliable web resources for diseases/injury information (i.e. Mayo Clinic, NIH, CDC) Using ICD-10-CM Tabular Notes Review of tables and flow charts in ICD-10-CM (AAPC edition) Discussion and use of electronic medical record in coding Chapter specific guidelines (i.e. infectious diseases, neoplasms, pregnancy) Steps involved in coding case examples
Learning Outcomes
Identify the names and purposes of the different coding languages utilized in the hospital and clinic setting. Distinguish how outpatient professional fee coding is different from facility coding. Evaluate which official ICD-10-CM Guidelines apply to a medical case and successfully apply the rules. Utilize appropriate sources, such as a medical dictionary, or reputable web references to research unknown medical terms, symptoms, diseases, and injuries. Successfully utilize the current ICD-10-CM Manual to correctly code multiple cases in each chapter of the ICD-10-CM manual. Successfully abstract the key words for medical diagnoses.
