MCOD 1410 - Procedure Coding (AMA CPT)

This course provides an introduction and study of each chapter of the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology Codes (CPT). Students learn the importance of accuracy in CPT coding. Direct learning occurs as students code medical cases throughout the semester. Current regulations and established AMA guidelines in code assignments are taught in this course. Students learn to use HCPCS Level II codes and modifiers. The class provides a solid foundation in CPT procedural coding

HCPCS II coding AMA guidelines and chapter specific information Coding exercises in a simulated electronic medical record AMA CPT codes for all chapters of CPT, including modifiers, new technology and quality reporting codes Documentation requirements for notes and surgical records AMA formatting of CPT codes including use of indentation and symbols
Learning Outcomes
Utilize approved references such as medical dictionaries or valid on line sites (i.e. Mayo Clinic, NIH, CDC) to reference medical terminology and medical procedures. Demonstrate the correct processes used in the AMA CPT manual to correctly solve coding questions. Identify and define the purpose of each of the code sets used in medical coding in hospital, clinic, and other settings. Identify the process of querying physicians when needed. Apply HCPC II codes and modifiers to medical questions/cases. Abstract key words from medical case studies/questions to determine main terms used for interpreting medical terminology into CPT codes. Illustrate comprehension of chapter specific guidelines by accurately coding specialty services and procedures Use the simulated electronic medical record to abstract key procedural terms from documentation needed information for CPT coding.
