MCOD 1451 - Coding Capstone

This course is designed to prepare students to be a Certified Professional Coder (CPC-A), which is a medical coding workforce requirement. The course content is licensed through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and focuses on diagnostic and procedural coding skills needed to pass the AAPC CPC examination at the end of the class. Students will use the International Classification of Diseases, the American Medical Association Current Procedures, and the level II Health Care Common Procedure Coding System to code medical cases which represent moderate and complex practical applications of the skills needed in the medical coding career.
Learning Outcomes
By using anatomy and physiology illustrations n the CPT manual, the ICD-10-CM manual, and the HCPCS medical coding manuals, students will correctly code cases in class. Students will demonstrate test taking techniques such as the process of deduction and the critical thinking skills needed for the CPC exam Apply the Center for Medicare rules for utilizing HCPC codes to medical cases.. Using the: ICD-10-CM coding book, the CPT manual and the HCPCS II manuals and course content, the student will demonstrate the correct understanding of medical terminology through accurate coding of medical cases Students will demonstrate advanced skills is abstracting medical and surgical terms from the case studies to efficiently code cases needed to pass the CPC exam. Students will complete multiple interactive questions in topic areas of The Business of Medicine, Integumentary System, Musculoskeletal System, Respiratory, Hemic, Lymphatic, Cardiovascular, Digestive, Urinary, Male Genital System, Female Reproductive System, Endocrine System, Nervous System, Eye and Ocular Adnexa, Auditory System, Anesthesia, Radiology, Pathology/Laboratory, Evaluation and Management and Medicine Sections Apply the Official ICD-10-CM guidelines by demonstrating the correct application of these guidelines to medical cases. Apply the American Medical Association guidance and rules for correct Current Procedural Coding to medical cases. Students will practice taking the CPC using three official AAPC Practice Exams.
