PHIL 1400 - World Religions
3 Credits
This course is about learning the central beliefs of the world’s major religions. Through writing, reflection, and presentation, students will explore the basic tenets of the world’s major religions, who founded the religion, their main writings or scriptures, and their philosophical underpinnings concerning such issues as definition of religion, the existence of God/gods, faith, reason, ceremonial practices, and their relationship with the world.
Learning Outcomes
explain how the world’s major religions view God, faith, and the world critically evaluate at least one religious tenet associated with your preferred religion (if you do not describe to any particular religion, you will critically evaluate the atheist or agnostic perspective) explore how the major world religions view ceremonial traditions complete a small group presentation where one traditional ceremony is compared and contrasted across religions describe similarities and differences between the world’s major religions in areas relating to their major writings or scriptures describe the similarities and differences between the world’s major religions in areas relating to their major philosophical underpinnings learn world’s major religions
