ARTS 1101 - History of Photography
3 Credits This course will allow students to explore photography and its effects on culture by examining the origins of the medium. While it may seem that photography belongs only to the twentieth century, students will learn that the origins of the first camera date back hundreds of years. Early photographers were often “frustrated painters,” and affected strongly by art and art history movements. This class then will begin with a review of the camera’s beginnings and of the artistic cultural milieu tat helped to bring the medium into adulthood in the twentieth century.
Learning Outcomes discuss ways in which photography affected 20th century culture acquire in-depth knowledge of a specific 20th century photographer “deconstruct” historic photographs identify major movements in art history use the Internet to research history of photography discuss ways in which photography might affect future cultures discuss ways in which photography affects current culture make photographs with an antique camera build and use “Camera Obscura” discuss methods of preserving photographs examine the role of Eastman Kodak in America discuss ways in which technology affects images of our culture compare early photographs to 19th and 20th century paintings apply the practice of contextualizing photographs to a specific time period identify photography’s place within various art history movements discuss ways in which technology affects image production view historic photographs in local museums assemble a history lesson in PowerPoint or I-movie acquire a general timeline of 20th century photography trace the history of motion pictures to photography
