ARTS 1550 - Art History, Renaissance to Modern
3 Credits This introductory course gives students a deeper appreciation and knowledge of Western art and the cultures that created it. This course focuses on the fascinating changes that occurred in the Italian Renaissance and continues through to modern artists and influences of the 20th century.
Learning Outcomes Identify major characteristics of each of the genre or eras covered in the class Research one related aspect of how historic events shape art history more deeply Understand that art is an expression of diverse values and influences Identify the expressive, economic and technical impact cultures have had on artists Describe how economic or political shifts during the Italian Renaissance, French Revolution and World War II fueled changes in art Use accurate art vocabulary when discussing works of art Identify works of art by title, time period and the artists who created them Identify a variety of paintings, architectural works and sculptures from Pre-Renaissance to Modern eras Explain the significance of artworks from major contributing artists in a variety of eras from Pre-Renaissance to Modern Understand that art and artifacts serve as a record of history in addition to oral and written records Correlate a basic knowledge of world history to specific artistic styles and periods Identify specific characteristics of a variety of art periods or styles, covered in class
