MCAP 1201 - Chassis
3 Credits Prerequisites MCAP 1000
This course teaches suspension systems using leaf springs, coil springs, McPherson struts, and torsion bars. Steering systems using manual and power rack and pinion, recirculating ball steering gears, alignment angles and their relationship to vehicle handling. This course includes basic principles of brakes, hydraulic system basics, disc and drum brakes, parking brakes, anti-lock brakes and power assist units. Emphasis will be placed on the operation, diagnosis and repair of various types of braking systems.

Learning Outcomes Perform maintenance and repair operations to vehicle brake, steering, and suspension systems in accordance with ASE standards. Research applicable vehicle and service information such as brake, suspension, and steering system, operations, vehicle maintenance components, service precaution and technical service bulletins. Identify the brake, suspension, and steering components and interpret brake, suspension, and steering adjustments to obtain operation and alignment. Demonstrate compliance with current automotive industry safety and environmental standards. Measure wheel, tire, axle, and hub runout; perform tire and wheel service and repairs. Inspect the operation of mechanical and electronic parking brake systems. Diagnose and repair concerns related to brake, suspension, and steering systems. Describe the purpose and function of a chassis system, and all their parts. Determine proper power steering fluids and leaks and diagnostic procedures related to customer concerns and proper actions to repair
