VTEC 1240 - Lab and Exotic Animal

This course presents the fields of laboratory animal research and zoological medicine, as well as the care and management of exotic pets. Discussion will include husbandry, animal behavior, nutrition identification, restraint, common clinical conditions, nursing procedures, and preventive health care. Mice, rats, rabbits, and other exotic and laboratory animals are utilized to allow bands-on experience.
Learning Outcomes
Complete hands-on essential skills required by the AV MA related to laboratory animals and birds. Identify and describe clinical signs of common diseases of laboratory animals and exotic pets. Demonstrate the ability to restrain, obtain objective data, perform nail trim and perform a physical exam on birds. Demonstrate ability to collect laboratory samples from mice, rats, and rabbits. Understand unique husbandry issues for birds, reptiles, amphibians, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and ferrets. Understand restraint of non-human primates and demonstrate knowledge of zoonotic diseases and modes oftransmission in non-human primates. Demonstrate ability to provide client education on birds, reptiles, amphibians, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and ferrets. Handle, recognize and restrain, determine sex and understand reproduction, understand the nutritional needs of mice, rats, and rabbits.
