VTEC 2100 - Animal Diseases and Nutrition

This course introduces students to the signs, diagnostic methods, and treatments of diseases in domestic animals. Prevention, zoonosis, and client education regarding common diseases will be covered. Animal nutrition, and the use of therapeutic nutrition and dietary management of disease will also be discussed. Diseases of each body system, as well as systemic and oncology cases will be presented. An understanding of animal behavior will be introduced.
Learning Outcomes
Understand the etiology of domestic animal disease and identify the diagnostic process of identifying animal diseases. Develop and communicate hospital nutrition protocol and compare key nutritional factors involved with various disease conditions. Identify body systems affected by disease processes in animals. Understand appropriate drug therapies for treatment of disease. Identify zoonotic potential of diseases and provide education and information about public health concerns andoutline prevention and treatment protocols for small animal diseases. Provide client education regarding signs, diagnostic methods, and treatments of common domestic animaldiseases, both infectious and non-infectious. Discuss current developments in nutritional supplements and additives including benefits and potential toxicities Understand and identify normal vs. abnormal animal behavior as a result of disease. Explain the nutrient requirements of healthy dogs and cats for various life stages. Develop and provide client education regarding prescription diets in a clear and accurate manner at a level theclient understands.
