VTEC 2110 - Large Animal

This course introduces the livestock and equine industry and the various species of large animal livestock. This includes livestock terminology, breeds, production systems, basic management practices, preventive medicine, lameness examinations and conditions, necropsy procedures and animal products and by-products. Techniques covered will include restraint, behavior, and medical and surgical nursing procedures of large animals and equine. This course includes field trips. Prerequisites: VTEC 1002, VTEC 1220, VTEC 1230,VTEC 1240 and VTEC 1250.

Learning Outcomes
Identify common surgical procedures of food animals and equine including dehorning, prolepses’ and caesarian sections and identify various methods of anesthesia in large animals.

Recognize the preventable disease of food animals and equine and identify disease prevention protocols for food animal and equine.

Apply large animal restraint devices including a twitch and tail restraint as well as halter, tie and lead horses and cattle.

Define the technician’s role in large animal nursing.

Identify normal food animal and equine physical parameter values.

Identify the breeds of food animals and equine.

Demonstrate techniques for administering medications and collection of samples and perform venipuncture onhorses and cattle.

Complete hands-on essential skills required by the AV MA related to large animals.
