VTEC 2120 - Anesthesia and Pain Management

The course will cover basic anesthetic principles and monitoring. The course applies basic utilization of anesthetic agents, the use and operation of allied machines, monitoring and care of the anesthetized animal patient, and the pre-operative considerations and duties for anesthesia. Other topics include understanding of veterinary dental techniques, emergency procedures, and control of post-surgical pain.
Learning Outcomes
Have a working knowledge of anesthetic and recovery procedures for mice, rats, and rabbits. Assess the patient’s risk status and determine appropriate anesthetic and peri-anesthetic protocols to provideeffective pain management and maximum anesthetic safety and effectiveness. Determine/maintain fluid infusion rate, develop familiarity with fluid delivery systems, and monitor patienthydration status. Given the characteristics of the patient and the surgical procedure to be performed, the veterinary technician will assure that anesthetic and post-operative pain management protocols are appropriate to provide maximum safety and benefit to the patient. Calculate dosages of appropriate anesthetic-related drugs and evaluate patient and implement pain management protocols as directed. Organize and implement anesthesia protocols and medical records/consent forms for surgical patients. Choose and utilize appropriate techniques and equipment to monitor the patient’s ongoing status accurately and effectively before, during and after anesthesia to provide for adequate anesthesia, analgesia, and a safe recovery. Maintain emergency medical supplies/crash cart, demonstrate ability to perform first aid and cardiopulmonaryresuscitation and apply emergency splints and bandages. Maintain and operate anesthetic delivery and monitoring equipment. Complete controlled substance log.
