ELEC 2110 - Electrical Apparatus Theory



3 Credits
Prerequisites ELEC 1120 , ELEC 1130 , ELEC 1240 

This course will consist of technical instruction and assessment of knowledge related to installation and operation of electrical switch boards, distribution boards, circuit breakers, disconnects, and industrial control panels. Students will receiveinstruction on basic and circuits, single and three phase motors, and transformers. Students will also study different single and three phase motor starting techniques, using soft starts and variable frequency drives. Students will study the NationalElectrical Code requirements governing the installation of electrical equipment.

Learning Outcomes
Calculate the primary and secondary currents of a transformer.

Demonstrate how to properly troubleshoot a motor control circuit using an electrical wire diagram.

Calculate the primary and secondary currents in a single and three phase power system

Calculate primary and secondary overcurrent protection.

Demonstrate how to calculate motor circuit conductors, motor overloads, and overcurrent protection based off voltage, horsepower, motor nameplate data and the National Electrical Code.

Demonstrate proper lockout and tagout techniques as well as proper use of personal protective equipment.

Demonstrate the proper use of an electrical multi-meter in testing for voltage, conductivity, and amperage within a circuit.

Demonstrate how to properly wire the primary and secondary sides of a transformer.
